Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Natural Resource Technology group is currently involved in a number of remote sensing related applied research projects. We work with industry, government and NGO’s to deliver innovative solutions to environment and natural resource related problems.


This Internship would support our Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) - based remote sensing and boat operated hydroacoustic operations. Additional duties may involve working with underwater cameras and acoustic telemetry. You would be asked to conduct imagery analysis and data processing functions related to a number of sensor platforms including RGB, NIR, multi-spectral, thermal, LiDAR, and sonar. Some field work related to data acquisition is also anticipated.


This is an excellent opportunity for a natural resource technologist, familiar with ESRI’s ARC-GIS, and wishing to advance their career in cutting-edge remote sensing technologies. Your background in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, forestry, vegetation analysis, and fisheries would also benefit from exposure to these technologies.

Duties and responsibilities


Working as part of a collaborative research team, you will apply your knowledge of spatial analysis, scripting languages (e.g. Python), and remote sensing data acquisition and analysis towards new and innovative solutions in GIS technology.  Your primary responsibility will be post-processing and the production of digital map and image products using a variety of different data sensors. Data acquisition is however, could involve working on a boat gathering hydroacoustics data or in the field gathering data with UAV pilots and payload specialists.

Knowledge and skills


 Enthusiasm for learning and an interest in digital analysis, 3D imaging, and GIS mapping. Keen to work as part of a collaborative team. Physically fit and ready to develop new skills related to UAV and sonar data acquisition operations. Comfortable with both ARC-GIS and ARC-GIS Pro. Willing to learn other software platforms including Pix-4D, Agi-Soft, EchoView, and manufacturer specific platforms for sonar and Lidar analysis.

Education required


GIS Certificate preferably in conjunction with either a Natural Resources related Diploma or BSc in the Biological Sciences or other related science.

Certification required


Class 5 Drivers License (preferred); First Aid (preferred); also beneficial, though not required, to have Radio Operators Certificate-A; Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate; SCUBA; UAV Ground School; and ATV Safety.
