Impactful Health R&D (IHRD) is a startup that develops biomaterials-based solutions for the food and health industries. Our vision is to become a world leader in biomaterials innovations. We are currently developing an active packaging to prolong the shelf life of fresh fish. IHRD is incubated at District 3 Innovation Center, which is part of Concordia University and we have access to a lab space where we do our research and development activities.

We are looking for a research assistant that has a strong background in microbiology, preferably as it relates to the food industry, in order to assess the anti-microbial activity of the packaging we are developing. The incumbent will work very closely with the co-founders and other employees of IHRD. They will also be part of a close-knit team that is driven to disrupt the packaging industry. Being part of a startup provides the opportunity for faster career growth as opposed to big companies.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct literature review
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures
  • Carry out experiments related to assessment of the anti-microbial activity of the packaging
  • Analyze results and produce progress reports
  • Assist other team members in various experimental work
  • Track supplies and keep the lab well stocked
  • Assist in grant applications
  • Present results to team members or others and communicate findings effectively
  • Attend project meetings
  • Monitor project budget

Knowledge and skills

  • Competent researcher with good knowledge in using standard lab equipment
  • Strong knowledge in microbiology and experience carrying out a wide range of microbiology assays
  • Knowledge about food industry an asset
  • Previous experience working in a lab an asset
  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinker with strong attention to detail
  • Driven and self-motivated
  • Organized and is capable of analyzing data effectively

Education required

  • Bachelor degree in microbiology, biological sciences, toxicology or the equivalent
  • Previous lab experience in microbiology is an asset
  • Previous work experience outside of academia is not required
