Description

NSCC’s Environmental and Agricultural Technology Research Group is an applied research group within the Nova Scotia Community College located in Middleton, Nova Scotia. The group collaborates with a variety of organizations using a suite of Geomatics technologies to explore environmental, health and social issues.

As a member of the NSCC’s Environmental and Agricultural Technology Research Group of the Annapolis Valley campus, the intern will be responsible for two areas of research and development. The first is investigating past episodes and trends of climate in order to improve Nova Scotia’s knowledge of future climate change scenarios and risks, while the second is working in collaboration with other research associates on the development of a Site Assessment Application Development for the Nova Scotia Wine Industry. In particular, help create a geodatabase containing a variety of observed and forecasted information and a web-based software application that will allow grape growers and wineries to easily access information from a browser in graphical and textual formats.

Duties and responsibilities

Using historical climate data to predict climate change trends for Nova Scotia, in an effort to improve our understanding of the timing, pattern, and magnitude of future climate perturbations.
Help identify seasonal climate change trends and develop risk models for potential events
Responsible for weather/climate data utilization and management related to the wine mapping project that will potentially help develop models related to yield prediction.
Develop status reports and give presentations related to the deliverables of the project.
Conduct fieldwork in support of data acquisition missions. May require both indoor and outside working environments.

Knowledge and skills

  • Two years of professional experience, preferably (but not necessarily) related to statistical analysis, GIS, climate/weather analysis
  • Experience related to climate/weather analysis
  • You have experience with statistical analysis of large datasets
  • Experience with compiling diverse datasets from various sources
  • Demonstration of robust analytic and spatial skills. Strong background in statistical analysis software (R, Matlab, SAS).
  • Strong working knowledge of GIS analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Exceptional client service skills and a proven team player
  • Ability to work as a team member in a deadline oriented work environment
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, problem solving techniques and the ability to look beyond symptoms to gather facts and information
  • Expertise in software including Microsoft office suite of products (Excel, Word, etc)

Education required

An advanced diploma in Geomatics (data analytics and/or GIS) and/or a Degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or related field. Advanced degrees (M.Sc. and/Ph.D.) will be considered an asset.
